The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any employee to successfully perform the essential functions of his/her job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or listen. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and to have a sense of smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds and have the ability to pull up to one hundred thirty-five (135) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is moderate with occasional exposure to loud noises.

Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.

Work involves considerable exposure to electricity, unusual elements such as extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Employees of this class perform skilled and hazardous tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in construction and maintenance of the electrical distribution systems, substations, and related equipment. Employees may be required to climb poles, work at moderate heights and work with high tension wires under adverse weather conditions, requiring skill and care to protect the lives of the employee and others. Work is normally performed under the supervision of a foreman; however, employees may be assigned to special trouble jobs where they are required to work independently. All jobs are subject to inspection as to quality of work by the foreman.

Must be knowledgeable in:

• The basics of secondary voltage in line work and primary and transmission.
• The use of equipment and materials used in line construction.
• The understanding of the principles of electricity as applied to power circuits, wiring diagrams and plant operations; ability to apply this knowledge to work problems as assigned.

Must have the ability to:

• Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Operate a PC system and utilize computer applications.
• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties.
• Climb up and down ladders.
• Balance as required to safely perform the climbing associated with the position.
• Use line tools and testing equipment in the installation and maintenance of electrical distribution and transmission systems and allied equipment.

Responsibilities: All duties listed may not be found in each position, nor does the list include all tasks, which may be assigned to positions in this class.

• Responsible for keeping work site and grounds clean and neat.
• Performs daily equipment checks as needed.
• Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures and operates equipment safely. Reports any unsafe work condition or practice to foreman.
• Available for scheduled and emergency overtime. Responds to emergency call outs at all hours.
• Must have the ability to complete projects in a timely manner.
• Constructs, maintains, and repairs the electrical distribution and transmission systems, including the setting of poles, anchors and guys, the placing of cross arms and insulators, stringing and tapping of wires and the installation of transformers, service drops and metering equipment.
• Performs trouble shooting work, locating short circuits, grounds, and other sources of power failure; repairs and restores electrical service where necessary.
• Must have the ability to operate special purpose line trucks and attached equipment as required.
• Performs other related and non-related duties as assigned.

Employee must possess a valid CDL Class B Ohio driver’s license and retain the ability to be insured by the City’s liability carrier.

Employee must have any combination of training and experience equivalent to:

Completion of four (4) year lineman apprenticeship training.

Some experience in difficult and responsible work in the construction and maintenance of overhead electrical systems and related equipment.

Minimum three years of Lineman work.

Employee must be a resident of the state of Ohio.

Employee must possess a high school diploma/GED.

Employee must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Non-Essential Duties: Working with other departments and performing duties outside of the Lineman position as directed by the immediate Foreman, Utilities Superintendent, Safety Service Director and/or Mayor.
