Police Department

We would like to let you know of some of the ordinances in our city that you may not be familiar with.  The Amherst Police Department strives to enforce all of the ordinances in the city.  We do this to ensure our city is a safe, clean and quiet city to live in.

The following are some of our parking and local ordinances you may not be aware of:

1. Parking is prohibited on a residential street between the hours of 2:00 am and 6:00 am. In the downtown area the times are 3:30 am and 6:00 am
2. Parking on the city streets and municipal parking lot #1, which is located next to the Amherst Cinema, is prohibited when the snow exceeds two inches.
3. Parking on tree lawns is prohibited
4. Parking downtown area in a space that is not marked as a parking space is prohibited
5. Bicycles are prohibited on the sidewalks in the downtown area
6. Dogs that bark continually or that run at large are a violation.  The police department issues a written warning for the first offense and a citation for each subsequent offenses.

Curfew Hours

Nighttime Curfew

10:00 pm for minors 12 and under
11:00 pm for minors 13, 14 and 15 years of age
12:00 am for minors 16 or more years of age.
The curfew is in effect until 6:00 am

Daytime Curfew

It is unlawful for any minor who is not excused from compulsory education or compulsory continuation education to be in or upon any public place during the period beginning at 8:30am and ending at 1:30 pm on days when the Amherst Public Schools are is session.

These are by no means all of the laws we enforce but these are some of the laws new residents may not be aware of or their previous city did not enforce. 

Power Outages

If you ever experience a loss of electrical power at your residence after normal business hours, you most likely will be calling the police department to report the outage.  When you call please tell the dispatcher your name, address and that you are without power.  Please do not inquire as to when the power will be on or what the problem is.  During the rare times we have a power outage in the city all of our phones lines are tied up.  Unfortunately, we have no idea when the power will be restored and multiple questions tie up our phone lines.  The best way to notify us of a power outage if it is not an emergency is to text us at (440) 988-4422.
