The Building Department serves to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. This department is charged with interpretation and enforcement of national and state building codes as well as other applicable local codified ordinances and regulations governing property maintenance, construction and land use. In addition, the department provides supervision of construction activities; acceptance of permit applications; issuance of all building, mechanical and miscellaneous permits; and verification of plan compliance with applicable building and zoning codes.
Department Services:
- Reviewing and approving all building plans for residential and commercial construction
- Issuing permits for construction including building, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC
- Registering contractors to perform work in the City of Amherst
- Investigating property maintenance and zoning code violations
- Processing requests for Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and Design Review Board
- Reviewing all developmental plans for residential and commercial development
- Issuing occupancy permits for new businesses or businesses relocating within the city
