As a resident of the City of Amherst, we would like to provide you with some basic information that you might find helpful.
The largest airport is Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport. This airport is located about 25 miles from Amherst. To get to the airport, take the Ohio Turnpike east and exit at I-480 (exit 151). Continue on I-480 east to the Grayton Road exit (exit 9). Turn left onto Brookpark Road (OH 17). Take the OH-237 S ramp and follow the exit toward the Airport. For more information, you can access their website www.clevelandairport.com.
Automobile License Plates and Drivers' License:
Non-resident plates are honored on a reciprocal basis; however, once residency is established, you will need Ohio plates. A valid drivers' license from another state is accepted as a temporary permit for thirty days, and you must obtain an Ohio license when you establish residency. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles telephone number is (440) 988-9064. Check the Government pages in the Centurytel phone book for locations and phone numbers of BMV sites for license and auto tag renewal. The E-check testing site in this area is located at 205 Sandstone Blvd. in Amherst. Their phone number is (800) CAR-TEST.
Christmas Tree Pickup:
The City picks up Christmas trees each January, generally during the first two full weeks of the new year. Trees should be placed on the tree lawn. All decorations must be removed.
Fall Leaf Pickup:
During the month of November, the Street Department picks up and recycles leaves raked to the curb/tree lawn. Please do not rake the leaves into the street. In early October, a schedule will be announced and posted on this website, as well as in the local newspapers and cable television station.
Fire Hydrant Flushing:
Fire hydrant flushing is one of the most important maintenance procedures that can be performed on a water distribution system. The Amherst Fire Department will notify residents on this website, through local newspapers and cable television station when this is being done.
Permits are not required for garage or yard sales. The City does ask that signs be kept out of the right of way, and not nailed to telephone poles. If you have any questions, please call the Building Department at (440) 988-3734.
The annual Halloween Parade is held the last Sunday of October, with trick-or-treat observed on October 31st from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Residents who wish to participate in passing out candy should turn on their outside lights.
Newspapers available by subscription include the Morning Journal (440) 245-6901, the Chronicle Telegram (440) 329-7000 and the Cleveland Plain Dealer (800) 767-2821. In addition, there is a local newspaper, the Amherst News-Times (440) 988-2801, that is distributed once a week. Amherst is one of the few cities that has its own cable television station, better known as ACC-TV. This station is available on Time Warner cable channel 98. City council meetings and information is broadcast on cable channel 12.
You may place glass, aluminum, steel cans, number 1 and 2 plastics, newspaper, office paper, paperboard and cardboard in the green recycling cart provided by Republic Services. The cart should be placed on the curb on your regular pickup day. Magazines, office paper, and newspaper can also be placed in the green and gold Abitibi containers located at the Amherst Library, the access road near the Post Office and Drug Mart, the parking lot at St. Joseph's church and various other locations in the city. Used motor oil may be taken to the Auto Zone, Sliman's or Valvoline Instant Oil Change for disposal.
Snow Removal and Parking Ban:
A snow emergency will be declared when there is two or more inches of snow on the city streets. During this emergency, there is no street parking. Please abide by this law as it is imperative that the snow plows are able to clear the snow in the city safely.
