Free service for deaf and hard of hearing
 
What: Sorenson Video Relay Service (SVRS) is a free service for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community that enables anyone to conduct video relay calls with family, friends, or business associates. Calls are placed and received through a professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter via a high-speed Internet connection and VRS equipment (i.e., a Sorenson VP-200 videophone).

Law Director Office Hours
 
The City of Amherst Law Director, Mr. Anthony Pecora, has announced that he will have office hours at City Hall on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month. 
 
 

Job Seekers Networking Group
 
What: Monday Morning Job Seekers Networking Group starting at the library. Start your job search week off with an hour filled with information, tips and networking with other people. Moderated by Library Director, Robin Wood (who has over 20 years experience writing resumes, interviewing candidates and helping people find jobs)

Household Hazardous Waste Collection 
 
David L. McGuire, Solid Waste Specialist, Lorain County Solid Waste
Management District, has just updated the information on the permanent
Household Hazardous Waste Collection center that is replacing the yearly
one-day locations at the JVS and LCCC.  He says that "the opening date for
the collection center was changed quite some time ago, and changed again
recently. The current estimate is now late in May or early in June."  If you
have questions you may direct them to Mr. McGuire by either calling

New Amherst Businesses  

Main Street Amherst would like to announce that there are two new businesses in the historic downtown district.

Sweet City Bake Shop which is located at 135 Park Avenue (Perk Avenue's old building) and is open Monday - Saturday 7 am to 5 pm and Saturday 9 am to noon.

Two Thrifty Chicks which is located at 258 Tenney Avenue (Mary's Bird World old building) and is open Wednesday - Saturday 10 am to 5 pm.

Artists wanted to paint wooden chairs for a live auction!  Contact Main Street Amherst at 440-984-6709. 



Artwork wanted for community auction

Main Street Amherst along with the Amherst Fire Department are looking for local artists, art teachers, groups, businesses, etc. that would like to donate their artwork on the canvas of a chair.  The chairs will be auctioned off live at The Taste of Amherst Wine & Brew Review on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at St. Joseph's Social Hall.  100% of the proceeds from this auction will remain in your community, such as summer hanging baskets around the downtown area or, perhaps, contributing to our annual Miracle on Main Street Christmas parade.

Workshop Players Homecoming Reunion 

Workshop Players on Middle Ridge Road, Amherst has been in operation for 62 years, but prior to the building becoming a theater, it was a one room school house. The theatre group is hosting a Homecoming Reunion, Saturday, October 2nd for anyone who attended school in that space.

Former students are asked to send their contact information to Marianne Clark (216-990-3370 OR mcsoul2love@yahoo.com) who spent several years of schooling in what is now the theater. She is interested in collecting memories to share in a booklet for attendees at the reunion. Light refreshments will also be served and guests will be treated to a tour of the theater.



Art Gallery Opening 

The Jenne Art Gallery at Sandstone Village will be hosting a Grand Re-Opening on the weekend of September 11 - 12 to celebrate the gallery’s renovation and all new artwork. Saturday hours from 6-10 PM. Sunday hours from 1-6 PM. Call 440-988-7255 for more info.

Beginning Animation Drawing Workshop 
 
When: Thursday, September 16
 
Who:  Kids in grades 4 and up
 
Where: Amherst Public Library
 
The Amherst Public Library will host an Animation Workshop for kids in grades four and up with local artist Mike Leuszler on Thursday, September 16, at 4 p.m. Students will learn animation drawing techniques and make a flip book to take home.  Register at the library’s reference desk or by calling 440-988-4230.

1.  TODDLER STORYTIME
For two and three year olds and their adults.
 
Three sessions are available:
·        Monday at 10:15 a.m.,
·        Wednesday at 11:15,
·        and Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
 
2.  FRIENDS AND FAMILY STORYTIMES                                                                                 
Stories are geared to preschool and Kindergarten children but other friends and siblings are invited to attend. Register at the first session you attend
 
Two sessions are offered:
·        Mondays, beginning September 27, at 11:15 a.m. and
·        Tuesdays, beginning September 28, at 6:30 p.m. 
 
3.  WADDLER STORYTIMES
            For ages 12 to 24 months

Firelands Endowment Fund Presents A Taste of Firelands  

Saturday, September 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Firelands Schools Endowment Fund will host a wine tasting at Matus winery, 15674 Gore Orphanage Rd.

Tickets are $25 for 8 samples. Extra tickets will be available for those wanting additional tastings. There will also be a silent auction. Light refreshments will be served.
